A few years ago, I was going through some generic “rough times” – my marriage was feeling unsatisfactory, my parenting skills were less than stellar, I found no joy in my work and I was out of shape. In a nutshell, I had a case of the blues. I decided to confide in two of my friends, who were concerned and supportive. They listened and empathized; they bought more wine and cried along with me a little bit. And independently, over the next couple of weeks, they each sent me a card. Nothing earth-shattering, but with very personal notes in which they expressed support for me and reminded me that I was important to them and their lives. It meant the world to me…I still have both of those cards and periodically read them when I need to. –L, 48
